I was commissioned by the Arts Council of England to contribute
to a children's art based CD-ROM called artExplorer. I designed
the shell and several of the projects.
This product allowed children to view the computer as a tool
as opposed to a means to an end. All the projects resulted
in a final paper based product.
The
UI was conceived of as a pseudo 3D space where the projects
were floating in an undersea world and the "cursor"
was a context sensitive 3D hand. Here
is an image of this main space. Where ever one traveled in
this world on was accompanied by a suitcase where you could
collect images from the library
that one could then use in any of the projects. There were
100 "boxes"
each of which contained 10 images of a particular type. The
projects themselves could also be stored in the suitcase.
As well as implementing the two section above, I also designed
and created the puppet
project. This allowed the user to design a story as an
animation of stick figures (dressed up with the images), add
speech (either using text to speech with selectable computer
voices or by recording their own voice) and play back the
animation (pausing at point where there was speech). All the
characters developed could then be printed out at a very large
size in such a way that one could assemble real puppets from
them.
